A behind-the-scenes look at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship, and its newest participant, up-and-comer Cody Maverick.

Lani Aliikai: [Cody and Lani wash off under a waterfall] Can I ask you something personal?
Cody Maverick: Lani, we're in the shower together! Y'can say whatever you want.
Big Z: Look at that. Do you know what you're sitting on there? This is koa wood. The best surfboards in the world are made of that stuff.
Cody Maverick: Yeah?
Big Z: You got a koa board?
Cody Maverick: I don't have a board board.
Big Z: Well, you wanna... you wanna make one?
Cody Maverick: Nah.
Big Z: What? Man! I come all the way back here to give you the necklace, and now I'm offering to make you a board and you say "Nah"? Get off your lazy butt, we're making a board. Come on. It'll be the best board you ever had, I'll tell you that.
Cody Maverick: Well, I lost.
Big Z: Yeah. Me, too. Come on, loser.
Tank Evans: [introducing his trophies] These are my ladies. This is Jill. This is my lady, Amy. Little Suzy. Brianna... y'know why we call her Brianna, right?
Filmmaker: N-no...
Tank Evans: [smirks] Yeahhhh, it's a long story.
[repeated line]
Chicken Joe: Radical.
Big Z: [Lying on his surfboard in the water with Lani and Cody in the sunset] This is what it's all about. What could be better than this?
Cody Maverick: I don't understand why everybody have to be so judgmental. I understand why mom's judgmental. I think it's 'cause she cares, *partially*. Think it's also partially 'cause, everyone else is lookin' at her like, "Hey, Cody's just a bum." "Cody's this," "Cody's that," "Cody's this."
[pause]
Cody Maverick: Cody's me, bro. Let me be me. When is that going to start?
Big Z: That's the best place in the world to be. In the tube.
Cody Maverick: Really?
Big Z: Oh, yeah. Better than winning.
Tank Evans: I'm gonna chum the water with your head!
Cody Maverick: Bring it on, pecker face! Let's go.
Tank Evans: Pecker face?
Cody Maverick: Good ol' Shiverpool.
[makes fart noise]
Cody Maverick: Heh-heh. This place sucks, bro.
[the kids are playing with Tank's trophy]
Tank Evans: No, no, NO! I'm telling my mom!
[one of the kids trip and the trophy breaks]
Arnold: Oops!
Tank Evans: Nooooo! Lia!
Chicken Joe: So it's day three. I come across Pen Guans.
Chicken Joe: [Cut to Joe tied to a spit, carried by Pen Guans] I'm Chicken Joe. Joseph. It's long for Joe.
[Pen Guan shouts at Joe in native language]
Chicken Joe: That's cool.
Chicken Joe: [cut back to Joe] They treat me as their king and put me in their hot tub. I guess their royal hot tub.
[Cut to Joe in a boiling pot, while Pen Guins dance and cut vegetables to put on pot]
Chicken Joe: It got all hot and steamy. It really opened up my pores.
[Pen Guans throw vegetables in pot]
Chicken Joe: They even served me food while I was in there. As great as it was, I still had a vision of my quest.
[Joe steps out of pot, Pen Guans shout and throw spears]
Reggie Belafonte: Hay, check this out! You wanna talk talent scouts? People find talent, I bring them back from the dead! The now living legend...
Big Z: Reggie, shut up.
Reggie Belafonte: What? What do you mean shut up?
Big Z: I'm not a legend. I'm just a guy looking for a nice wave and some good friends.
Filmmaker: Since we're talking about surfing, why don't you give us your thoughts about surfing?
Cody Maverick: Surfing, surfing... Where do I start?
Filmmaker: How about just at the beginning?
Cody Maverick: Okay, well... So as soon as there was the first wave, right? - there was the first surfer. All they needed was, like, um, a piece of driftwood, a block of ice or something like that, and then they were off. And they were hooked, man. They were hooked. Up 'till recent times, you had your old dudes, you know, your hang-six cats, these old guys used to lay down with these huge, humongous boards. These guys were the pioneers, but nobody saw what surfing could really be until Big Z did it.
Filmmaker: Could you tell us who Big Z was?
Cody Maverick: Who was Big Z? You're asking the right guy. You got that far. Z is everything. Big Z is surfing. I mean, there might as well not been an ocean before Z. They invented the ocean for him. Cause he lived so hard because he wasn't afraid to live. He wasn't afraid to die. He came to Antarctica when I was just a kid. Man, it was the biggest thing that ever happened here. And suddenly there he was. Just floating over the water. Just hovering, you know, like weightless. He could've walked up to anyone, and he walks right up to me. And he gives me this awesome, one-of-a-kind Big Z necklace. And then he tells me, "You know, kid, never give up. Find a way, 'cause that's what winners do." He was the greatest. Everyone looked up to him, respected him, loved him. And one day, one day, I'm gonna be just like him.
Big Z: Back in that day, winning was everything to me, and I knew I was gonna beat Tank. But then he starts surfing circles around me. I saw what he was doing. Times change. Well, I didn't want to go back to that beach, in front of all my fans, thinking "Look at Big Z, the loser, the has-been." So... poof! Big Z's dead. And he's gonna stay that way.
Mikey Abromowitz: I, am on, *so* much migraine medication you have no idea... The stress is killing me. I dunno how much longer I can last, I hafta tell you that right now!
Filmmaker: Do you have any other talents?
Cody Maverick: Heh, you mean like, singin' and dancin'? Naw, man, I just surf.
Ivan "Fire Urchin": Stepped on me, stepped on me? Are you kidding? This guy was dancing on me! I mean just look at this, broken, broken, gone, gone, broken, broken, broken...
Big Z: [reaches out to catch some rainwater in a water gourd in the treehouse that serves as his residence] Sure-fire remedy - learned it from an old medicine man... works every time.
Chicken Joe: You know, we've known each other way back since, like... yesterday, I think it was.
Big Z: You know what surfing is about in here.
[points to head]
Big Z: but not in here.
[points to heart]
Chicken Joe: Cody. I know he's out here. I can feel it in my nuggets!
Rob: How's it feel to win, Joe?
Chicken Joe: I won?
Big Z: No joy, man. No joy. Fail.
Arnold: A winner is someone who doesn't knock me off my surfboard, and break it when I'm trying to get some big waves. Especially Tank, he's definitely not a winner.
Smudge: He's a dirty trash can full of poop.
Big Z: How's it going, Skank? You have a little sand in your egg sack there, fella.
Filmmaker: So, Cody, when you take your first wave, and the whole island's there to watch, what's it gonna be like?
Cody Maverick: It's gonna be amazing. Honestly, it'll be the best wave of my life, and I hope the cameras are rolling because you're gonna want to watch it over and over and over and over again. It's gonna be awesome
[cut to Maverick wiping out]
Cody Maverick: [to the camera] I'm not gonna lie to you. This is like, it's huge man. Winners find a way, no matter what, right?
Reggie Belafonte: If it's all the same to you, I don't want to talk about Cody anymore. He lost. End of story.
Mikey Abromowitz: Don't you care about anybody else?
Reggie Belafonte: He'll be fine, he was born in the water. He's a penguin, for crying out loud.
Mikey Abromowitz: Didn't you see that big wave hit him?
Reggie Belafonte: Well, dude, that's the whole idea of surfing.
Mikey Abromowitz: [Storms off] You know, I care! I care!
[last lines]
Glen Maverick: Go back to Hollywood.
Edna Maverick: Cody would never do this.
[last lines]
Cody Maverick: Here I am, having a good time, riding the waves with my friends, not caring about who wins or loses but just surfing. Good old-fashioned fun, that's, well, fun! Okay, I guess you're just tired of hearing me talk about myself, so I'm off...
[runs into the waves to surf]
Filmmaker: Not again.
Rob: Dig this, Sal. Section behind me, it's called The Boneyards. Very few surfers have ventured in there and come out alive.
SPEN Announcer: Are you trying to telling me people have died here?
Rob: That's right, Sal.
SPEN Announcer: A moment of silence for them... And we keep it moving!
[in the aftermath of a storm]
Chicken Joe: Lani, where's Cody?
[Cody's surfboard washes ashore, and Lani starts crying]
Mikey Abromowitz: You know, I used to scout for songbirds - toucans - for this musical revue in Brazil... Now that's show business.
[first lines]
Filmmaker: Quiet on the set. And we're rolling. Cody Maverick interview, take one.
Cody Maverick: So why are you guys here to interview me?
Chicken Joe: Squidito on el stickito?
Glen Maverick: [offscreen] Loooooserrrrr!
[hits Cody in the head with a snowball]
Filmmaker: Y'know we're here to make a movie about Cody...
Cody Maverick: Why does - does he have to be here?
Glen Maverick: Yeah, it's gonna be great. Can I get in line now to *not* see it?
Cody Maverick: [to Big Z] Oh, well, well this is, that's great. As long as we're all having fun, right?
[Cody has just raspberried at Glen]
Glen Maverick: That's really disrespectful.
[Cody blows another raspberry]
Glen Maverick: I would never do that...
Cody Maverick: Mm-hm. You just wouldn't make it out of your mouth.
Cody Maverick: This is insane.
Lani Aliikai: Stop fighting it, Cody! Just let go!
Big Z: What are you doing? Hey, who said you...? Turn the board around. Get back here.
Cody Maverick: Come out here and show me some moves.
Big Z: You havin' fun?
Cody Maverick: I hate you.
Lani Aliikai: Oh, crap!
[runs out to save drowning penguin]
Cody Maverick: Oh man, I'm in love.
Arnold: Help me, I'm drowning.
Chicken Joe: What are you standing here next to me for? You should go talk to her.
Cody Maverick: No way, man! I'm not gonna go talk to her.
Chicken Joe: Dude, she's totally into you! She called you crap!
[Cody chucks a sleeping Z into water]
Big Z: Are ya having fun?
Cody Maverick: [laughing] Yeah, I'm having fun!
Big Z: Good! You passed!
Chicken Joe: Whoah! You gotta try this blowhole thing, man! This whale dude is giving me a brain freeze.
Big Z: You wanna surf like Big Z used to right?
Cody Maverick: Yeah.
Big Z: I got some tests here to figure out your potential.
Cody Maverick: Let's do it.
Reggie Belafonte: [after seeing Cody wipe out] Oh, that was spectacular!
Arnold: [Lani saves him] Well, thanks again.
Lani Aliikai: Alright, well this is the third time you've been unconscious this week. I just don't think it's very good for your brain.
Arnold: I know.
[hugs Lani]
Filmmaker: Aren't you worried about being out here in the jungle? Isn't it kinda dangerous?
Chicken Joe: Dude, the jungle is like the most peaceful place on the planet.
[Pen Guans appear and blow darts at Joe and the camera]
Reggie Belafonte: Who wants to see the little guy take on the champion? Whoever rides the biggest wave wins.
Arnold: Little guys rule!
Reggie Belafonte: Young Cody Macenroe was a beacon for a new generation. May he rest in peace.
Reggie Belafonte: [Speaking fast like an auctioneer] So, what am I bid for the board? Do I hear thirty? Come on, thirty!
Lani Aliikai: Woah, woah, woah. woah. Arnold, no.
Tank Evans: [pushing Chicken Joe away] Keep your girlfriend out of this.
Cody Maverick: [on camera] I could tell he needed some space and, you know, some time for himself. I didn't want, you know, ask him all these questions, so I just kind of stood there quietly.
Cody Maverick: You're Big Z! I can't believe it! You're alive! You're alive!
Cody Maverick: [on camera] That's the respectful way to go, I think.
Mikey Abromowitz: They're in it for the joy of it and the rapture and the slow-motion instant replay, which is my...
Reggie Belafonte: Mikey, why don't you head on over to the snack bar and get yourself a big bowl of shut up?
Big Z: [Cody is balancing on his board] And a big set comes in...
[splashes Cody with a bucket of water; Cody falls]
Big Z: Ha ha ha, WIPE OUT!
Edna Maverick: It really wasn't that easy for him growing up. Like I said before, he never, he never really knew his father.
Cody Maverick: I'm not really the person to ask about it, truthfully, because I was too young to remember. I mean, look, I'm not the only kid on the island whose dad was... y'know... eaten.
Filmmaker: Mr. Topanga, Mr. Topanga! Can you tell us why you're not dead?
Big Z: No!
[breaks the boom mike being waved at him]
Big Z: I am dead!
[disappears back inside his hut]
Rob: I don't believe this. This contest was Maverick's to win. Now Evans pushing Maverick out of bounds and into the Bone Yards.
Cody Maverick: Tank, look out.
Tank Evans: You look out.
Big Z: Code!
Cody Maverick: Z!
Big Z: Cody, come on!
Cody Maverick: Z!
Big Z: Paddle! Come on! Dig! Faster! Come on. Dig! Dig!
[sees a wave coming]
Big Z: Don't dig! Don't dig!
Cody Maverick: What?
Big Z: Let the wave carry you, Cody. You're gonna have to time it! You're gonna come right here. Right to me. Five... four...
Cody Maverick: Three... two... one... Z!
Tank Evans: [to Reggie] Tank needs fuel.
Chicken Joe: Butt freeze!
Cody Maverick: [he and Big Z are hanging upside down] Can we do some training? Like, seriously, please?
Big Z: What are you talking about? Whaddaya think we're doing?
Cody Maverick: We're acting like a couple of nut jobs, that's what I think we're doing.
Big Z: Yeah, good. You're learning.
Big Z: You did it. You're ready. Let's surf. Come on.
Cody Maverick: Don't play with me Z. We're surfing? Yes!
Tank Evans: A role model? No. But I do consider myself somebody that everyone should look up to. Kids should try to pretend that they're Tank. I mean, they should try. Good luck, kids!
Edna Maverick: He was a little, teeny, small egg, he wasn't very impressive. Glen was the big egg, Cody was the small egg. He can't help it, he's... you know, that's just the way he is.
Cody Maverick: Was that cool? You guys got what you need?
Mikey Abromowitz: Start the whale!
Lani Aliikai: I'll be watching you.
Cody Maverick: Really? You'll be watching me?
Lani Aliikai: Well, yeah, from the lifeguard station.
Cody Maverick: Yeah, you know yeah.
Big Z: Long smooth strokes. Dig deep. Dig, come on.
Cody Maverick: I'm digging! I'm digging!
Big Z: Keep the nose up! Keep it up! Watch it! You're pearling!
Cody Maverick: What are you doing?
Big Z: Come on, please? Z, I can't learn anything with you on the beach, man.
Cody Maverick: Well, then you're not gonna learn anything. Now, come in.
Cody Maverick: How many points would you give for getting tube? Like, what does it depend on for the contest?
Big Z: Points? You know who you sound like right now?
Chicken Joe: [to Lani] I can help, though. Except if there's blood. Just the thought of blood makes me... makes me...
[faints]
Tank Evans: Number one, the Tank!
Big Z: [teaching Cody to carve a board] All right, look. First of all, with the grain. With the grain. You see what I'm doing here? You let the tool do the work, you see? Just like you're riding the wave, you let the wave do the work. You don't fight the wave. You can't fight these big waves.
Tank Evans: This spot here, this is for my special lady. Lia. I'm gonna say that one more time. Lia. Oh yeah. That's a sweet, sweet lady.
Tank's Mother: Tank! Are you polishing your trophies again?
Tank Evans: Mom! I wasn't polishing, I was just talking to my friends!
[to camera]
Tank Evans: I'm gonna polish them later.
Tank Evans: [doing pushups over hot coals] Right, no, I getcha. What's winning without the losers?
Tank Evans: [later, still doing pushups over hot coals] It feels better, when there's a lot of losers around... was, was that your question?
Lani Aliikai: I love my job. I have an amazing job. Just this week, with the contest coming up and all, it's a little crazy. You really have to be extra, extra attentive. And you have so many guys in the water and you can't miss a thing. But you know what, I have a perfect record. I've never lost anybody, Sure there have been close calls, but...
Arnold: Help!
Lani Aliikai: Oh, Arnold. I turn my back for one...
Reggie Belafonte: [angry] I promote happiness! Can you see the happiness emanating from me? What's wrong with you?
Lani Aliikai: Okay.
Cody Maverick: That was awesome. How you said his life and all. That was just unbelievable really.
Cody Maverick: [to Big Z] It's a work in progress, bro.
Tank Evans: First, I'm gonna take you down. Then I'm gonna fry the chicken.
Chicken Joe: [Lying on his board, staring at the sky] Whoa! That cloud looks just like a kitten. Aww.
Kate: [in a "vox pop" segment] My surfboard, uh, well, it's made out of palm wood... and while it's not very pretty...
[the skeg of the surfboard can be seen falling off]
Kate: ...it does the job quite well.
Lani Aliikai: You know, I'm kinda jealous of you...
Cody Maverick: Of me? ME? Why?
Lani Aliikai: Well, I've been trying to get Z out of his shack for years, and then along you come and you get him out in one day...
Cody Maverick: What's the story between you two, anyway?
Lani Aliikai: He's my uncle.
Cody Maverick: Your UNCLE?
Lani Aliikai: Yeah. He's the only family I've ever had.
Big Z: Hey, everybody. Yep, it's me. It's Z. I got lost out there, but this young kid, Cody, he brought me back to shore. Thanks a lot, Cody.
[Lani embraces Cody out of sheer joy]
Big Z: You mess up my board, I'm messing up your other foot.
Cody Maverick: Hey, I'm just trying to ride this canoe of whatever it is, okay?
Cody Maverick: My name's Cody Maverick, Shiverpool. You?
Chicken Joe: No, I'm not from Shiverpool. Dude, I'm from Lake Michigan. That's where I surf. I was the only one around my town who did it.
Tank Evans: What's up with the hair? You could fit a whole fish in there.
Cody Maverick: [to the camera] I've been surfing ever since I can remember. It's hard to imagine any part of my life when I wasn't surfing.
[wandering around the jungle]
Cody Maverick: It's tough enough losing a father, but to go through it AGAIN...
Cody Maverick: You should have been here yesterday. We had a sweet swell yesterday.
Big Z: He's not even paying attention to that wave.
Filmmaker: What wave?
Big Z: That one.
[Draws an X on the sand]
Big Z: Five, four, three, two, one.
[the wave overtakes Cody and washes him ashore at the X Big Z draws on the sand]
