Two FBI agents attempt to clarify the murders occurring in a desolate region. They approach the witnesses of the latest incident with the help of the local police. All of them hide something and all have wildly different stories to tell.

Bobbi Prescott: We were pretty sure we didn't get the job.
Officer Degrasso: Wait wait wait wait wait, you mean they didn't hire you on the spot?
Bobbi Prescott: Oh no, we weren't interviewing to be cops.
Sam Hallaway: You probably read the end of a book first, don't you?
Bobbi Prescott: Yeah.
Sam Hallaway: That is no way to live.
Sam Hallaway: You fired into your partner, and you opened him up like a can of soda! Pop! PING!
[imitates soda spraying out of a can]
Janet: [about the copious evidence] Now what I'm wondering, why would they be so sloppy?
Sam Hallaway: They're likely to improve.
Janet: Ah I see, yeah.
Sam Hallaway: Unless ma'am - they just don't give a shit.
Mom: [before being shot] I'm not... having... a very... good... time.
[first lines]
Elizabeth Anderson: You're never going to sleep again.
Sam Hallaway: That's the point.
[last lines]
Sam Hallaway: Well, she was on to us, so I thought that's fun. So let her go free.
Elizabeth Anderson: I think that's the most romantic thing ever in the whole world.
Sam Hallaway: [offers a cigarette] Jack?
Officer Jack Bennett: Smoking kills.
Sam Hallaway: No. No. You do.
Sam Hallaway: There's only one way to unfold a note, so to speak, without tearing the paper.
